Actor Eric Dane passed away on February 19 at the age of 53. Widely recognised for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, fondly known as “McSteamy,” on Grey's Anatomy, Dane had revealed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ALS and had spoken openly about how the illness gradually affected his body.

Over the course of his career, Eric built an impressive body of work across television and film. Apart from Grey’s Anatomy, he appeared in several prominent projects, including HBO’s Euphoria, the series Countdown, and the 2024 action film Bad Boys: Ride or Die, among others.

Eric Dane – Early Life

Born on November 8, 1972, in San Francisco, Eric was the eldest sibling of William Dane and Leah (Cohn) Dane.

In 1993, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. That same year, he made his television debut with an appearance on The Wonder Years. He gradually built his resume with small roles in well-known sitcoms such as Saved by the Bell and Married... with Children, steadily establishing himself within the industry.

Eric Dane – Career

Dane’s career spanned more than 35 years in television and cinema. His major breakthrough came in early 2006 when he joined Grey’s Anatomy, eventually appearing in 145 episodes and becoming one of the show’s most memorable characters.

In 2014, he took on the lead role in the series The Last Ship. His film credits include roles in Marley & Me and 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die. He also appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand and Burlesque.

Personal Life

Dane married actress and model Rebecca Gayheart in 2004. She survives him, along with their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia. Throughout his battle with ALS, Dane often credited Rebecca Gayheart as his greatest champion and most steadfast supporter during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
