Toy Story 5, one of the most cherished animation franchises, is returning seven years after its final chapter, and Disney and Pixar have released the first full trailer.

Woody has a small bald spot and is wearing a poncho when he and Buzz reconnect, but the teaser adds a comical yet poignant touch. Joan Cusack plays Jessie, and Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz, respectively.

Jessie, Forky, Slinky Dog, Hamm, Trixie, and even an army of Buzz Lightyears team up with Blake Clark and Tony Hale to help Bonnie realise the worth of her toys.

The ensemble is enlarged by new characters. Craig Robinson's happy GPS hippo Atlas, Shelby Rabara's animated camera toy Snappy and Conan O'Brien's toilet-training tech toy Smarty Pants make their debuts.

Andrew Stanton, who is best known for directing Finding Nemo and Wall-E, is the film's director and writer. Kenna Harris is a co-director.

Stanton has told Variety that the plot is more an examination of how digital devices have changed childhood than it is a classic good-versus-evil conflict.

The events of "Toy Story 4," which concluded with Woody choosing freedom over life in Bonnie's toy chest, are followed in this sequel. One of the biggest concerns going into the movie's release is how that separation is handled.
