After years of rumours and wishful thinking from fans, it seems the desert adventure is calling once again. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly set to reunite for a brand-new instalment of The Mummy — and for many who grew up watching the original films, the news feels like a long-awaited homecoming.

Universal has confirmed that the next chapter in the franchise is scheduled for release on 19 May 2028. The date has reportedly been reserved as a major event slot, with no other big Hollywood releases currently pencilled in for that weekend — a strong vote of confidence in the enduring appeal of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

For audiences, the heart of The Mummy was never just the action or the special effects. It was the chemistry between Brendan Fraser’s roguish adventurer Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz’s bookish yet fearless Evelyn Carnahan.

Rachel Weisz starred in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), but did not appear in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Maria Bello took over the role. At the time, Rachel Weisz reportedly stepped away due to dissatisfaction with the script and an alleged reluctance to portray a character with an adult son.

Brendan Fraser remained with the franchise for all three films, which together grossed around $1.8 billion worldwide. Reflecting on the long wait for a proper continuation, he told the Associated Press: “The one I wanted to make was never made,” Fraser said as he went on to reveal that the third film was made only because the Olympics that year was set to be held in China. "NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and we went to China."

"I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want," Fraser said.

After the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise failed to reignite the franchise despite earning over $400 million globally, many fans hoped the studio would return to what made the series special in the first place.
