Actress Wenne Alton Davis, widely recognized for her appearances in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and New Amsterdam, has died after being struck by a car in New York City on December 8, according to confirmations from both police and her agent given to The New York Times.
Davis was 60. Authorities told the publication that she was hit by an S.U.V. traveling along West 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. The vehicle reportedly attempted a left turn onto Broadway, during which it struck Davis as she was crossing. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police have not filed charges at this time, and officials confirmed that the driver remained on the scene following the collision.
Her agent, Harris, spoke to Entertainment Weekly and shared an emotional tribute, "I can only describe Wenne Davis as a bright light. She had a huge love for New York, for acting, for her colleagues at JFK and, most of all, her family and her circle of friends (which was also huge). She was someone for whom friendliness and kindness were not what she did but more who she was as a person."
Harris continued, "We all agree that she had much more to do in her career as an actor and her life. Literally, no one I've spoken to can believe that she's no longer with us."
Originally from outside New York, Davis relocated to the city in her late 20s to pursue stand-up comedy before transitioning into screen acting. Alongside her entertainment work, she also held a security position at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Born Wendy Davis, she made her most recent television appearance in 2023 on the Prime Video hit The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, portraying a police officer opposite Rachel Brosnahan’s titular character.
Her career also included roles on several acclaimed television series, such as Rescue Me, Girls5eva, New Amsterdam, Blindspot, and American Odyssey. Davis appeared in the 2014 TV movie The Normal Heart and the 2011 drama Shame, further cementing her range as an actress.
