Singer Miley Cyrus recently opened up about the emotional reason her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was brought to tears on his birthday this year.
Miley's new song, "Secrets," which she dedicated to her father, was released in September. After years of alleged hostility between them, she called the song a "peace offering."
Billy Ray, 64, was moved to tears when he received the song as a birthday present, demonstrating how deeply the gesture affected him.
Speaking on CBS News Sunday Morning with Tracy Smith, Miley revealed, “My dad cried. Everyone I tell that to says, ‘I remember the moment my dad cried,’ because it’s something you don’t see often.” The singer added that the song brought about “mixed emotions,” explaining that she and her father have learned to move forward without needing to revisit the past.
“For me and my dad, music is how we communicate best,” Miley said. “We didn’t feel like we needed a big conversation. Once he heard the song, it said everything that might have taken a family with a more structured, therapeutic way of talking many sessions to express.”

Later, Billy Ray expressed his emotions on Instagram by sharing a sentimental picture of himself and Miley while listening to their 2009 duet Butterfly Fly Away. In the caption, he wrote, “One great song can do more for the soul than a million therapy sessions. I agree! Music changes everything!”
Though his tears were private, Billy Ray publicly expressed his gratitude by thanking Miley for Secrets on his birthday, August 25 — proving that the song truly bridged the emotional distance between them.
