
Universal has recently announced Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist, release date. The film was initially scheduled to hit the theatres in March, but the production was postponed.
Oscar-nominated Scarlett Johansson and Hamnet sensation Jacobi Jupe starrer The Exorcist will be released on March 12, 2027.
The latest film for Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is written, directed, and produced by Flanagan. It has been called a "radical new take" on the classic horror franchise.
In William Friedkin's original Exorcist, a woman (Ellen Burstyn) employs two Catholic priests to execute an exorcism on her 12-year-old daughter (Linda Blair), who is demonically possessed.
The movie, which made $441 million worldwide and had ten Oscar nominations when it was released in 1973, was a critical and commercial success.
Universal paid an incredible $400 million in 2021 to get the rights to a new Exorcist trilogy. Burstyn returned as Chris MacNeil in 2023's The Exorcist: Believer, which made $136 million at the film office worldwide. Although Flanagan's picture will take place in the same universe as the 1973 movie, it is not a follow-up to Believer.
Flanagan, Jason Blum, and David Robinson are the producers of The Exorcist. Ryan Turek and Alexandra Magistro are executive producers. In collaboration with Flanagan's Red Room Pictures, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, and Morgan Creek Entertainment, the film.

The film revolves around Exorcist Father Harris, who investigates teenage Emily's demonic possession by Asmodeus in Hazelwood. Joined by the doctor, mom, he faces visions, deaths, paranoia, battling ancient evil threatening to consume the town.
This is Flanagan and Blumhouse's fourth joint project; he authored and directed Oculus in 2013. Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil both came out in 2016. The Life of Chuck, Flanagan's most recent film, took home the TIFF audience award in 2024.
