Michelle Obama shared a very personal and heartbreaking thing about the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner.
Michelle said that she and her husband, former US President Barack Obama, were supposed to meet the two of them on the exact night they were discovered dead in their home in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 14.
Longtime friends of the Reiners, the Obamas were meant to spend the evening together.
“We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night,” Michelle Obama said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on December 15.
Speaking from the heart, Michelle Obama described Rob and Michele as “some of the most decent and courageous people.”
She also addressed remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who controversially linked the deaths to “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
Responding firmly, Michelle Obama said, “Let me just say this — unlike some people — Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know. They are not deranged or crazed, what they have always been are passionate people in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on. They cared about their family, this country, and fairness and equity. And that is the truth, I do know them.”
Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, both celebrated in the entertainment world and admired for their activism, were found dead at their Brentwood home, prompting an immediate investigation.
Rob Reiner's son Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the killing of his parents, Los Angeles County prosecutors said Tuesday.
Nick Reiner, 32, will be charged in the death of the 78-year-old actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced at a news conference with LA Police Chief Jim McDonnell.
Authorities reported locating Nick near the University of Southern California about six hours after the bodies were discovered.
The announcement of the charges came two days after the couple was found dead from apparent stab wounds in their home in the upscale Brentwood neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Nick Reiner was arrested on suspicion of the killing and jailed hours later.
Nick Reiner had been expected to make an initial court appearance earlier Tuesday, but his attorney Alan Jackson said he was not brought from the jail to the courthouse for medical reasons and the appearance would not come before Wednesday.
Arguments prior to the day of their murders
Reports suggest a tense build-up to the tragedy. Witnesses noted that Rob Reiner and Nick Reiner had a “very loud argument” at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien the previous night, after which Rob and Michele left.

As per PEOPLE, one source said, “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.”
On December 15, former President Barack Obama expressed his grief, stating, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen.”
He added, “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people - and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
