Tobey Maguire kicked off the Spider-Man franchise by donning the iconic red suit for the very first time. Andrew Garfirled and Tom Holland have since continued the franchise, with all three Peter Parkers from three different universes being reunited in the latest instalment, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tobey Maguire, Andrew and Tom’s reunion created a buzz among the fans, with the viewers demanding that the writers continue with the cameos.
Years after Sam Raimi's acclaimed trilogy revolutionised superhero filmmaking in the 2000s, the screenwriter recently aroused new fan excitement by expressing his interest in writing a new instalment starring Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.
According to reports, the idea originated in July when a fan on X (formerly Twitter) asked for insights from The Batman: Part II co-writer Mattson Tomlin on what the character might be and whether he would ever consider writing a Spider-Man movie.
Responding to the fan’s question, the screenwriter wrote, “Honestly, right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father.”
Slow and steady wins the race. There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t gotten a “no” yet! https://t.co/hdYju4h0p4— mattson tomlin (@mattsontomlin) October 26, 2025
The hopes of fans who remained devoted to Raimi's version, the one that made Tobey Maguire's sincere, passionate Peter Parker famous, were sparked by that one tweet.
Another fan then followed up over the weekend to inquire about "any movement" on the potential project. Tomlin's response was hopeful but tantalizingly ambiguous.
He wrote, “Slow and steady wins the race. Tomlin added, “There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet!”
Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is presently slated for release on July 31, 2026, will mark Tom Holland's next appearance as Spider-Man in the MCU. Although not much is known about the movie, Holland hinted in April 2025 that it would be a "fresh start" for his portrayal of Peter Parker, suggesting a new stage in his narrative following the events of No Way Home.
Robert Pattinson will return to his role as Gotham's stoic guardian in Tomlin's other superhero project, The Batman: Part II, which is scheduled for release in October 2027.
