Ten years after Harry Potter actor Alan Rickman’s death, his widow Rima Horton is honouring the beloved actor’s legacy by drawing attention to pancreatic cancer research, the illness that claimed her husband's life in 2016.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Rima Horton reflected on the life and untapped potential of the Harry Potter star while urging people to support a fundraising initiative for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
“He had so much more to give. There were so many more things he could have done,” she said during the interview, hinting at the sense of loss she still felt a decade on.
Rima Horton revealed during the interaction that her husband Alan only survived for six months after being diagnosed.
Chemotherapy helped to prolong his life, though it ultimately failed to cure the disease.
Highlighting the urgency of early detection, she explained why pancreatic cancer remains so deadly.
“The biggest problem is that by the time that people find out they’ve got it, it’s too late. The symptoms are so difficult to work out. What we’re trying to do is raise money for a breathalyzer test which could provide an early diagnosis,” she said.
As part of the fundraising effort, Pancreatic Cancer UK has launched a special prize draw inspired by Alan Rickman’s enduring legacy as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.
Fans who donate a minimum of £5 stand a chance to win a rare collector’s item, a complete set of all seven Harry Potter books, signed by 12 major cast members from the franchise.
According to the charity, the books have been signed by several of Rickman’s former co-stars, including Rupert Grint, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Emma Thompson, Matthew Lewis and others.
The organisation noted that the initiative marks ten years since Alan Rickman’s passing while raising “vital funds in his memory to change the future for everyone affected by this devastating disease.”
Alan Rickman’s death came as a shock to fans worldwide, largely because his family chose to keep his diagnosis private until his passing. In the days following his death, tributes poured in from colleagues across film and theatre.
Among them was Daniel Radcliffe, who described Rickman as “undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with.”
“Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career,” Radcliffe wrote. “Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man.”
Longtime collaborator Emma Thompson also paid tribute, calling Rickman the “ultimate ally” and remembering “his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness.”
A decade later, Rickman’s impact both as an actor and a human being continues to resonate, now serving as a powerful catalyst in the fight against a disease that still takes far too many lives.
