At the 2026 Berlin Film Festival, Oscar-nominated actor Ethan Hawke weighed in on the ongoing debate about whether actors should publicly speak out on political issues — offering a candid and humorous perspective on the subject. Speaking at a press conference for his new historical drama The Weight, Ethan argued that while performers are often put in the spotlight for their views, they may not always be the best sources of political or spiritual guidance.
When asked whether stars should use their platforms to address issues like fascism, Hawke quipped, “Alright, the last place you probably want to look for advice in your spiritual counsel is a bunch of jet-lagged, drunk artists talking about their films," drawing laughter and applause at the event.
Despite his light-hearted opening, Ethan didn’t shy away from acknowledging that cinema and storytelling wield significant cultural influence. He said he believes in the power of film to shape collective consciousness and inspire reflection on important themes. “I believe in the power of cinema to affect you know how every night we all dream and those dreams kind of heal us and get us ready for the next day? I feel like, collectively, the whole festival - all of you, all of us here - are responsible for creating an international dream life."
Ethan Hawke ultimately affirmed his personal stance against fascism, telling journalists, “Anything that fights fascism, I’m all for it.”

His new film, The Film, co-starring Russell Crowe, explores themes of masculinity and moral survival in Depression-era Oregon, which Hawke used as a springboard to discuss "the weight of love" in action.
