The news comes amid ongoing public attention surrounding Spears’ social media activity.

Britney Spears was arrested on Wednesday night in California, according to records from Ventura County authorities. The 44-year-old pop icon was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol at around 9:30 p.m. PT and later released the following morning.

As reported by TMZ, Spears was allegedly arrested for driving under the influence. However, official records cited by NMC News do not specify the reason for her arrest.

Arrest documents reviewed by the Press Association show that Spears was booked on March 5. TMZ further reported that she was detained by the sheriff’s department at approximately 3 a.m. on Thursday and released from jail around 6 a.m.

The news comes amid ongoing public attention surrounding Spears’ social media activity. In recent years, she has frequently posted videos on Instagram, many of which show her dancing alone inside her Thousand Oaks, California home. While some fans have expressed support, others have mocked the videos or voiced concern about her well-being.

As of Thursday morning, Spears’ Instagram account appeared to have been taken down.

Britney was earlier married to Kevin Federline with whom she shares two children.

Her arrest also takes place roughly five years after a judge ended the controversial conservatorship that had governed much of her life for over a decade. The legal arrangement, which lasted 13 years, gave her father control over her finances, career and personal decisions following a series of mental health crises in the early 2000s.
