Immigration emerged as one of the most powerful themes at the 68th Grammy Awards, as multiple artists used music’s biggest stage to speak candidly about identity, gratitude and resistance. Among the most moving moments of the night came from Best New Artist winner Olivia Dean, who dedicated her win to her immigrant roots and the courage that shaped her journey.

During her acceptance speech, Olivia paused to acknowledge her grandmother, drawing a clear connection between her success and the sacrifices of immigrants. “I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant,” she said. “I wouldn’t be here — I’m a product of bravery, and I think those people deserve to be celebrated ... we’re nothing without each other.”

The theme continued throughout the Grammy Premiere Ceremony, where several artists offered pro-immigration and anti-ICE messaging. The Country Duo/Group Performance award went to first-time winners Shaboozey and Jelly Roll, with Shaboozey delivering an emotional speech through tears. “I want to thank my mother, who as of today, has retired from her job of 30 years ... working as a registered nurse in a psych ward ... as an immigrant in this country. Thank you, mom. Immigrants built this country, literally, actually. So, this for them. Thank you for bringing your culture, your music and your stories.” he said.

Songwriter Amy Allen, who won Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical) for the second consecutive year, made a visible statement by wearing an “ICE Out” pin onstage. The same message was echoed by Kehlani, who won her first Grammy for R&B Performance and later her second for R&B Song. Overcome with emotion, Kehlani reflected, “I’ve never won anything before, this is a really crazy feeling,” before shifting focus to the broader political climate, “Imma leave this and say, (expletive) ICE.”

Backstage, music icon Gloria Estefan voiced deep concern. “I’m scared,” she said. “There are hundreds of children in detention centers. ... I don’t recognise my country in this moment right now.”

On the red carpet, Justin and Hailey Bieber also joined the chorus of solidarity, sporting “ICE OUT” pins. Coordinating in black, Hailey wore a sleek strapless gown with minimal styling, while Justin, nominated for four awards, opted for an oversized double-breasted suit.
