Filmmaker Vasan Bala deactivates Twitter account

Filmmaker Vasan Bala’s account on X (formerly Twitter) has been deactivated, just days after facing online backlash for defending the box office failure of his latest release, Jigra. The Alia Bhatt-starrer has struggled at the box office, but in a recent interview, Bala emphasized that he doesn’t view commercial success as the sole measure of a film’s worth.

By Sunday, his X account, which had been active just a day before, was deleted. Replies to his past tweets now appear as empty spaces with the message: “This post is from an account that no longer exists.” The page where his account once stood is now blank.

Speculation has emerged that Bala’s account deactivation followed the wave of hate directed at him for defending Jigra. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, which he had shared on X, Bala stood by the film. However, many in the replies criticized him as being “arrogant” for not acknowledging the film’s underperformance.

Interestingly, since his account’s disappearance, the tone on social media has shifted, with many now supporting Bala. Some argue that he should not bear the brunt of Jigra’s failure alone.

On Reddit, screengrabs of his inactive profile sparked debate, with one user commenting, “They marketed it as an Alia Bhatt movie, yet now he’s the one facing the heat.” Others questioned why Karan Johar, who prominently promoted the film alongside stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, has remained silent as Bala is left to address the fallout.

Jigra, which tells the story of a sister’s mission to rescue her brother from a foreign prison, received mixed to positive reviews upon release. However, its box office performance has been underwhelming. Despite a production budget reportedly around Rs 80 crore, the film has earned only Rs 40 crore so far and is unlikely to break even.
