Fans of The Penguin got a dose of mixed news at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Director Matt Reeves confirmed that Cristin Milioti, who just bagged her first Emmy for playing Sofia Falcone, will not appear in The Batman 2.

But before disappointment sinks in, Reeves also hinted that Milioti’s return could happen sooner than expected, in a potential second season of the hit HBO Max series.

Matt Reeves on Cristin Milioti’s Absence

Speaking on the Emmys red carpet, Matt explained why Cristin wasn’t part of the upcoming sequel. "Cristin's not in this one. But that's because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, so. But we'll see. I mean, I think she's incredible. What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did in creating that character – I mean, creating this version of the character – is so special."

"So, it'd be really exciting to do something with her. But, she's not in this one, in full disclosure, just because we were so far along in the story that it was like, 'Oh gee, we could,' it might upset the applecart, let's say, given where the story goes, and what we were exploring." he added.

Matt admitted her inclusion might have disrupted the narrative flow. “There are some things where it's like, 'Oh, we'd love to do this,' but actually, that doesn't fit within where the story goes.”

The Penguin Season 2 Could Be On the Way

While Cristin is sitting out the Gotham feature, her character may not be gone for long. The Penguin, which picked up nine Emmy wins out of 24 nominations, is already being discussed for a second season.

Matt, who serves as executive producer and writing supervisor, told Variety, "We’re in discussions. [Showrunner] Lauren [Lefranc] is thinking hard and we’re talking, so we’ll see. We love the show, and we think our cast is so incredible. The work that Lauren and the writers did was incredible. Our passion was in it, but never in our wildest dreams could we imagine it would have been received in the way that it was."

Cristin’s win, along with the show’s critical success, is likely fueling momentum for another run. For now, fans will have to wait and see if Sofia Falcone claws her way back into Gotham.
