Some stories are uncomfortable, yet necessary. Chiraiya, an upcoming six-episode social drama starring Divya Dutta, arrives on JioHotstar on March 20, 2026, with a narrative that confronts one of the most sensitive issues within Indian society.
Directed by Shashant Shah and produced by SVF Entertainment, the series explores the complex and often unspoken realities surrounding marital rape and consent within marriage.
The recently released trailer offers a powerful glimpse into a world where silence has long been mistaken for harmony. At its core, Chiraiya delivers a strong message that marriage does not equal consent, and a woman’s voice, dignity, and bodily autonomy cannot be erased by social expectations or tradition. Through its emotionally layered storytelling, the show aims to encourage viewers to question long-standing beliefs and reflect on the meaning of consent within relationships.
The story follows Kamlesh, played by Divya Dutta, who appears to be the ideal daughter-in-law in a close-knit family. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she learns that her sister-in-law Pooja is suffering sexual abuse within her marriage. What begins as a quiet concern gradually evolves into a deeply personal moral conflict for Kamlesh. She finds herself torn between protecting the honour of the family and standing up for justice.
As difficult truths emerge, Kamlesh begins questioning the social values she once accepted without hesitation. Her journey reflects the emotional complexity of confronting injustice within one's own home, highlighting how silence and societal pressure can allow harmful norms to continue unchecked.
Speaking about the series, Alok Jain from Jio Star said, “We truly believe that powerful stories can open hearts and start conversations that matter. Chiraiya reflects our commitment to bringing honest, bold and relevant narratives to audiences. This subject may not always find space in everyday conversations, but stories like these must be told with honesty, care and responsibility.”
Abhishek Daga, Business Head of SVF Entertainment, shared that the project marks an important step for the production house. “With Chiraiya, we are stepping into the Hindi long-format space with a story that is both unsettling and necessary. We believe narratives like this can encourage reflection on issues of consent, dignity and the complicated dynamics that often exist within institutions we trust.”
Director Shashant Shah described the project as emotionally demanding. “The discomfort in Chiraiya comes not from extreme moments but from everyday silences and normalized behaviour we rarely question. The story is not about blaming anyone; it is about holding up a mirror.”
Divya Dutta, who portrays Kamlesh, said the role deeply affected her. “Kamlesh is a woman bound by family values but forced to confront injustice. Her awakening is quiet yet powerful, and I hope the story encourages people to rethink the norms we have accepted for generations.”
Featuring a strong ensemble cast including Sanjay Mishra, Siddharth Shaw, Prasanna Bisht, Faisal Rashid, Tinnu Anand, Sarita Joshi and Anjum Saxena, Chiraiya promises a thought-provoking viewing experience.
The series will begin streaming on JioHotstar from March 20, 2026.
