The Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the murder of Assamese musician Zubeen Garg has informed a court that the primary motivation for the homicide was financial gain.

According to a TOI report, Assam Police detectives told the Kamrup (Metro) sessions court that Garg's former manager, Siddharth Sharma, reportedly embezzled crores from the singer and then killed him to keep the money safe.

The SIT claims that Sharma used funds purportedly embezzled from Zubeen Garg to invest close to Rs 1.10 crore in a packaged drinking water company. The Mahabir Aqua Water Plant, which is situated in Chaygaon's Chatabari Industrial Area, received the investment.

Dr. Rosie Kalita, the chief investigating officer for SIT, testified in court that the singer's premeditated murder was mostly motivated by this financial investment.

In accordance with Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the SIT filed a petition to have the Mahabir Aqua Water Plant attached and forfeited. The investigators cautioned that Sharma and his business partner Chetan Dhirasaria might liquidate the funds if the property is not attached right away.

According to the petition, any future compensation awarded by the court to the late Zubeen Garg, the victim, could be impacted by such liquidation.

Judge Gautam Baruah issued letters to Siddharth Sharma and his partner after hearing the plea, requesting that they provide justification for why the property shouldn't be attached. They are required by the court to provide their responses by January 17.
