March 9 marks the third death anniversary of veteran actor and filmmaker Satish Kaushik. Remembered for his immense contribution to Indian cinema and his distinctive humour, Kaushik was also known among friends for being deeply devoted to his daughter, Vanshika Kaushik.
On the occasion, an old interview of his close friend and veteran actor Shabana Azmi has resurfaced online. In the conversation, she spoke about the late actor’s emotional bond with his daughter and how worried he became during the Covid-19 pandemic when both he and Vanshika were infected.
According to a 2023 interview reported by ETimes, Shabana Azmi recalled a moment when Kaushik called her while she was in Budapest. She revealed that the actor was extremely anxious about his daughter’s health.
“Satish loved his daughter. I was in Budapest and I got a call from him, he was crying and he said, ‘I have got Covid and Vanshika has also got Covid’.”
Shabana explained that Kaushik’s biggest concern at the time was the possibility of being separated from his daughter during quarantine.
“They are not allowing us to stay together and what will the little girl do alone if she is quarantined? So, do something warna main mar jaaunga (I will die) if they separate me from my daughter.”
The anecdote once again highlighted how deeply protective and emotional he was when it came to his family.
While Kaushik was known for such heartfelt moments, he was equally admired for his unique sense of humour. Shabana Azmi also shared another incident that reflected his witty personality while interacting with renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal.
She narrated the moment when Kaushik had stepped out of a nursing home carrying his X-rays.
“Once, he walked out of a nursing home with his X-rays in his hand. That is when Shyam Benegal, who had heard from someone that Satish Kaushik is a great actor, called him. He told Satish to bring some of his photos and come to his house. Satish looked at the X-rays and joked, ‘Shyam babu, main X-ray bhej dunga, kyunki andar se main bohot khoobsurat hoon (I will share my X-rays as well because I am beautiful from the inside).’”
Satish Kaushik passed away on March 9, 2023, at the age of 66. He died after suffering a heart attack while travelling in a car in Gurugram.
The post-mortem report later confirmed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest triggered by a blockage in the coronary artery. Police authorities ruled the case as a natural death.
Kaushik is survived by his wife, Shashi Kaushik, and daughter Vanshika Kaushik.
Over the years, he left a lasting impact on Indian cinema through his memorable performances and direction. He is fondly remembered for playing the iconic character ‘Calendar’ in Mr. India and for directing films such as Tere Naam and Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai.
His passing came as a major shock to the film industry, but his legacy continues to live on through his work and the countless memories shared by colleagues and friends.
