Shahid Kapoor, now over 20 years into his Bollywood career, has rejected claims that he entered the industry because of his father and veteran actor Pankaj Kapur. He noted that his parents separated when he was three and emphasized that Pankaj Kapur “never made calls” to secure him roles.
On the Punjab First Voice podcast, Shahid spoke about his family background, including the separation of his parents, Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem. He added that, despite public perception, he didn’t step into films because of their celebrity status.
“People think I am an actor because I am Pankaj Kapur’s son, but my parents separated when I was just three. I didn’t spend much time with my father, so nobody even knew I was his son, nor did I ever use his name. I lived with my mother. Things just fell into place for me. I never asked my father for help, and he never made calls to get me work,” Shahid said.
Looking back on his career, Shahid said that nothing about his journey was planned. Born to actors Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, he said acting wasn’t a predetermined path. As a teenager, his love for dance led him to classes that eventually became a source of income. His entry into acting happened by chance. He accompanied a friend to an audition, was spotted by the team, and ended up booking a Pepsi commercial with Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji, which opened the door to more opportunities.
Shahid also spoke about his parents briefly and said, “I was too young when my parents divorced, but you do feel the void. I think many people can relate.” After her 1984 divorce from Pankaj Kapur, Neliima raised Shahid on her own. She later had another son, Ishaan Khatter, with ex-husband Rajesh Khattar. Shahid was just three and a half when his parents split.
Shahid Kapoor was last seen in Deva.
