Sanjay Leela Bhansali has officially announced his next cinematic venture, Jai Somnath, setting a 2027 worldwide release for the historical drama.
Revealed on Mahashivratri 2026, the project promises to be a visually spectacular and emotionally rich telling of one of India’s most defining historical narratives. Sanjay presented the film with a powerful tagline — “A temple can be broken, not the faith” — signalling the production’s focus on spiritual and cultural perseverance.
The film will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ketan Mehta, marking a significant collaboration between two of Indian cinema’s most respected storytellers. Known for his work in historically rooted and socially impactful films, Mehta takes on both writing and directing responsibilities, while Bhansali will produce the venture under the Bhansali Productions banner, alongside Maya Movies and Saregama.
Sharing the teaser on social media, they wrote, “A temple can be broken, not the faith. Sanjay Leela Bhansali presents - “JAI SOMNATH”. Directed by Ketan Mehta. In cinemas worldwide, 2027.”
Although specific plot details are still under wraps, the title Jai Somnath strongly suggests a narrative centred on the Somnath Temple — a symbol of resilience and faith in Indian history. The temple, located in Gujarat, has stood witness to multiple invasions and reconstructions over the centuries, and its story of destruction and rebirth is likely to form the emotional core of the film. With India marking 1000 years since the original attack and subsequent reconstructions, the timing of the film adds historical and cultural weight to the project.
The collaboration between Sanjay and Ketan has already sparked anticipation among industry observers, not just because of their individual reputations for cinematic grandeur but also due to the film’s thematic depth.
With Jai Somnath locked in for a 2027 release and anticipation building, audiences will be watching closely for casting announcements and further production updates in the months ahead.
