What initially appeared to be a brazen late-night shooting outside the home of filmmaker Rohit Shetty has now unravelled into a far more complex investigation, with police piecing together how young men were allegedly drawn into the plot with promises of money and recognition.

According to investigators, the accused were allegedly recruited through a combination of social media outreach and local contacts, with members of the Shubham Lonkar gang said to be behind the operation.

As per TOI, police sources claim the men were enticed with offers of quick cash and a sense of belonging — a narrative that reportedly framed the attack as a “mission” undertaken by “Hindu sainiks” to create fear and attract attention.

The main accused, Deepak Chandra Sharma, was allegedly paid Rs 50,000 upfront and assured a larger amount after the job was completed.

Officials believe the operation was divided into two parts: a Pune-based module that handled logistics, and a North India-based group that allegedly carried out the firing.

Earlier this week, the Mumbai Crime Branch, along with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, arrested seven additional suspects. Those named in reports — including Deepak Chandra Sharma, Sonu Thakur, Hrithik Yadav, Vinshu Kushwaha, Jatin Bhardwaj and Vishal Thakur — are said to be from Agra, Etawah and parts of Haryana.

Sources suggest the Pune unit may have received around Rs 60,000, while the Uttar Pradesh group was allegedly promised Rs 1 lakh for executing the attack.

However, police have stressed that the financial trail is still being verified. Investigators have also noted inconsistencies in the statements given by the accused, suggesting there may be more layers to the conspiracy yet to be uncovered.

Five of the accused were produced before the MCOCA court on February 17 and have been remanded in police custody until February 23.

The firing incident took place on January 31, when unidentified assailants allegedly discharged four rounds outside Rohit Shetty’s residence in Juhu. Soon after, a social media post surfaced claiming responsibility in the name of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang — a claim authorities are still examining.

The case has also intensified concerns within the film industry. Actors such as Ranveer Singh and Ayush Sharma have reportedly faced threats in recent days, leaving many in Bollywood unsettled as the investigation continues.
