Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao has been trending online for his noticeably altered appearance at the Bolti Khidkiyaan Short Film Festival in Mumbai, where viral videos showing his weight gain and thinner hairline sparked widespread discussion and concern among fans.
Amid the social media buzz, Rajkummar took to Instagram to explain that the physical changes were intentional and necessary for his role as public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam in the upcoming biopic NIKAM, which required him to gain about 9–10 kg and adapt his look without using prosthetics. He emphatically noted that he prefers working hard on his body and character preparation rather than relying on artificial enhancements.
Standing firmly in support of her husband’s dedication, Patralekhaa, who is also an actress and Rajkummar’s wife, took to her Instagram Stories to applaud his commitment and discipline behind the scenes. In her note, she wrote, “So proud of you, Rajkummar Rao. You give it your all for every film project you take on. The world doesn’t see the process and hard work that an actor puts into developing a character."
She further added, “The end result always looks easy. Behind all the fame and glamour that meets the eye, an actor’s life is filled with blood, sweat, tears, and the sacrifice of personal life."
Rajkummar’s clarification about his physical transformation — now complete for NIKAM — comes as he prepares for his next major role portraying cricket legend Sourav Ganguly, which will involve shedding the gained weight and entering “Ganguly mode,” as he described it.
Earlier today, Rajkummar Rao shared an Instagram post,“I’m not a believer in prosthetics as long as I can achieve the look through my hard work which I’ve achieved in Nikam, be it gaining weight or looking old (to play a certain age) or to make my hair thin which my hair stylist was very much against but everyone told me to not go half bald for BOSE also and to gain that much weight or to not stop eating and lose so much weight for TRAPPED or to not behave like a visually impaired person even when cameras weren’t rolling during SRIKANTH," he wrote.
