At the trailer launch of Subedaar, Mona Singh spoke with refreshing honesty about why she refuses to play it safe.
Having recently impressed audiences as Dhanwant Kaur in Kohraa Season 2, Mona Singh is once again stepping into unfamiliar territory and that, she says, is exactly how she likes it.
Opening up about her choices, Mona Singh said, “So, you know, mostly actors want to not repeat themselves. And I have always tried not to play the same role that I have played before.”
It is a simple thought, but one that clearly guides her career. For Mona Singh, comfort zones are limiting. She would rather take a risk, even if it means doubt and sleepless nights, than repeat something she has already mastered.
Talking about what attracted her to Subedaar, Mona Singh shared her gratitude. “And I feel very, very lucky, grateful that I have such friends. Suresh offered me this role. And I really found it very challenging because I have never played such a role. You know, the name is Bubbly but she is not Bubbly from anywhere.”
Describing the role further, Mona Singh added, “So yes, it was very very challenging. You have to catch the dialect of a heartland and you are also a goon. You are running a sand mafia. I have made Subedar ji sad in the movie. There's a lot of action happening because of Didi.”
It is not just about attitude or action; it required her to adopt a specific dialect, understand the world of the character, and convincingly portray someone powerful and morally complex.
For Mona Singh, challenges are the real reward. “Every actor likes challenges. I like it the most. To do things which surprise me, which challenge me, which give me some sleepless nights. So I felt all that while playing this and it was very fun.”
With Subedaar, Mona Singh once again proves that she is not interested in repeating herself.
