Filmmaker Karan Johar gave fans a rare and heartwarming glimpse into his life as a father, sharing a series of intimate photographs with his twins, Yash Johar and Roohi Johar, on Instagram.
The pictures, far removed from the glamour of film sets and red carpets, capture a softer, everyday side of the director — full of laughter, playful chaos, and deep affection.
The occasion was particularly special: Yash and Roohi, born via surrogacy on 7 February 2017, were celebrating their seventh birthday. In the photos, Karan Johar is seen posing with his children in a simple studio setting, dressed in relaxed, coordinated outfits.
In some frames, the trio sits together on a couch, mirroring each other’s expressions with their chins resting on their hands. In others, the twins climb onto chairs to hug their father, plant kisses on his cheeks, or burst into laughter mid-shot.
What stands out is the comfort and ease between them. Karan Johar appears less like a public figure and more like a parent fully present in the moment — smiling, laughing, and occasionally striking playful poses as Yash and Roohi take centre stage.
One photograph shows him standing between the twins as they cling to him proudly, while another captures a quiet moment of him simply watching them with unmistakable fondness.
Sharing the images, Karan Johar wrote, “My life… thank you @sheldon.santos @goyalkalinka @meghakulchandani @len5bm for making today so special ….”
The post quickly drew warm reactions from friends and colleagues. Kareena Kapoor Khan commented, “Best father and the best bachas love you three YJO,” with many others praising the beautiful bond he shares with his children.
In a candid discussion on former tennis star Sania Mirza’s podcast Serving It Up with Sania, Karan Johar opened up about how childhood experiences of being bullied over his weight continue to shape his parenting. At 53, he admitted that he is “paranoid” about his twins gaining weight, saying, “I want to tell you that 50% of me is so scarred by my childhood that I get paranoid that my kids would gain weight. I carry childhood trauma. I keep saying, ‘Don't eat sugar’. But a part of me wants to liberate them from it.”
Recalling moments of exclusion, he added, “I remember I was told, play dabba gul because football is not for you. Those words still echo in my mind. I get angry if my kids miss or bunk a football class because they have too many classes in school.”
Karan Johar admitted he is in a “conflicted zone of parenting,” constantly navigating societal pressures and the influence of social media while trying to give Yash and Roohi a childhood full of love, freedom, and joy.
