Bollywood’s veteran lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar recently provided a delightful moment of humour while hosting his niece, Farah Khan on one of her popular cooking vlog episodes. Farah, who was visiting Javed and Shabana Azmi at their Mumbai home Sukoon to film a biryani-making segment, sparked laughter when she asked a simple question that led to a classic Akhtar roast.
During the casual conversation in the couple’s lush garden, when Farah asked how many years this had been going on, Shabana replied, “Ektalis saal ho gaye humari shaadi ko (we have been married for 41 years).” When Farah innocently asked what “ektalis” meant, Javed Akhtar looked genuinely bemused before bursting into laughter and teasing her about not knowing how to count in Hindi. “41. Oh my God. Hum jo gareeb Indians hain, usse ektalis bolte hain” — he joked, poking fun at her confusion with his trademark wit.
The playful banter didn’t stop there. In another light-hearted moment on the vlog, Javed also ribbed Farah’s cook, Dilip, during a poetry attempt, quipping, “Ek-do aur sher padhe toh yeh building gir jaayegi” (if you recite one or two more couplets, this building will fall down), setting off more laughter among the group.
Farah’s cooking vlogs — which she started in 2024 with Dilip — have become known for these kinds of candid, humorous exchanges that go beyond just food. Visiting celebrity homes and drawing laughs from everyday moments, the episodes have built a loyal online following. Farah has even shared that her YouTube earnings from the vlog now surpass what she made in her filmmaking career, and she has teased that she plans to return to film direction later this year.
