The interior designer and film producer, Gauri Khan has lovingly restored her family’s heritage home in Dalhousie, turning it into an intimate luxury retreat while keeping its emotional core intact.

The six-bedroom property, The Chestnut Grove, belongs to her maternal uncle, Tejinder Tiwari, but for Gauri Khan, it has always been much more than just a house.

This is the home where she spent her childhood summers, running through corridors with cousins, gathering for long family meals, and making memories that stayed with her.

Reimagining that very space as an adult — and as a designer — clearly made this project deeply personal.

The estate has a long history. As Rustam Tiwari shared with HT Lifestyle, “The property was bought in 1933 by mine and Gauri's great-grandfather, Suraj Bhan Tiwari. It's a 6BR property with a covered area of 8000 sq ft with large suite-style guest rooms and massive common areas. It's located in the heart of Dalhousie, and was the centre of all Gauri's childhood vacations.” He further added, “The estate was part of our shared family heritage and was where Gauri and I, along with the extended family, spent many of our childhood holidays together. That personal connection played a key role in shaping the way the space was eventually designed.”

Today, The Chestnut Grove has been opened for exclusive stays, offering privacy and quiet luxury amid Dalhousie’s greenery. Guests can book individual rooms or the entire villa, making it ideal for families wanting their own shared escape, much like the one Gauri Khan once had.

The home itself feels warm rather than overly polished. Large glass windows let in soft natural light, a fireplace anchors the living space, and the bedrooms blend wood, stone and plush fabrics to create comfort without formality. There are private garden rooms, a king suite, even an attic suite — each designed to feel welcoming.

Rustam Tiwari revealed, “Gauri worked very closely with me throughout the design process, not just as a designer but as someone who understood the memories and emotions attached to the place.” He explained, “The guiding thought was to preserve the soul of the old family home while adapting it for contemporary luxury living. The design focuses on large communal spaces, warm materials, understated elegance, and a layout that encourages families and groups to spend time together — much like we did growing up. The interiors reflect comfort and warmth rather than formality, making the property feel lived-in and welcoming.”
