Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra tells students ‘failure is not the end’ ahead of board exams: 'I failed my first exam, topped next year'

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra shared a personal story with Class 10 and 12 students, recalling how he failed his first film institute exam but returned the next year to top it. He encouraged students to stay courageous, reminding them that failure is often the start of something greater.

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra has a profound and very personal message to deliver as the board exams for children in Classes 10 and 12 draw near. It is based directly on his own life experience.

The filmmaker talked to the students and reflected on how exams don’t define one’s destiny.

He said, “At this stage of your exams, some of you will go one way, and some will go another. To those who move ahead, you have my best wishes. And to those who may stumble, I have just one message for you.”

He revealed, “I failed my first exam at the film institute. I went back to Kashmir and spent a whole year very disheartened. But somewhere within me, I found the courage to restart. The following year, I topped that exam — and today, I am sitting in front of you. This is a true story. Never forget this.”

Vidhu Vinod Chopra reminds students that failure is not the end but frequently the start of something revolutionary by drawing on the idea that has impacted millions of people through his films 3 Idiots, 12th Fail, and Zero Se Restart.

In a really touching moment, the director is also heard singing songs from his movies, which further reassures young people dealing with test anxiety.

He concluded his message by wishing every student courage and calm during this crucial phase, saying, “All the very best to every student appearing for their exams. May God be with you.”

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s last directed 12th Fail. It is based on Anurag Pathak's 2019 nonfiction book of the same name, which tells the story of Shraddha Joshi Sharma (Indian Revenue Service Officer) and Manoj Kumar Sharma (who rose from terrible poverty to become an Indian Police Service officer). Vikrant Massey, Medha Shankar, Anant Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Priyanshu Chatterjee are among the actors in the movie.
