Actor Sandeepa Dhar is opening up about the pressures many women experience when it comes to beauty standards and constant comparisons, both in society and within families.
While promoting her latest film Do Deewane Seher Mein, the actor shared her thoughts on how these expectations can quietly affect people’s confidence and self-image.
In the film, Sandeepa Dhar plays Naina, the elder sister of the character portrayed by Mrunal Thakur. The romantic drama explores themes such as colourism, beauty standards and the emotional struggles women often face while trying to meet society’s expectations.
Through Naina’s journey, the story highlights the kind of pressure many women go through but rarely talk about openly.
Speaking about her character in an interview with Zoom, Sandeepa Dhar explained that Naina initially appears to have the “perfect” life.
However, after marriage, her confidence slowly begins to fade. Over time, the character finds herself caught in a cycle of trying to constantly change and improve herself — whether it is through dieting, focusing on her looks or seeking approval from others.
According to Sandeepa Dhar, such pressure has become increasingly common today, particularly in the era of social media. People are constantly exposed to advertisements and online content promoting flawless skin, anti-ageing solutions or the idea of achieving a slimmer body.
Over time, this steady stream of messaging can make individuals feel as though they are always falling short.
The actor also spoke about another issue that many people can relate to — the culture of comparison in Indian families. Reflecting on her own childhood, Sandeepa Dhar shared how siblings are often compared with each other while growing up.
“In Indian families, we struggle with constant comparison. That’s what you also see in the film. I’ve seen it with my brother. He and I were constantly compared growing up. It could be asked in front of the school teacher. If you’re in the same school as your brother, the teacher will always say, “Why can’t you be like your brother or sister?’ Or your mom will say, “Why can’t you be more like your brother? These things parents don’t realise that it could be trauma. When you grow up, children start behaving in a certain way. Comparison can be such a horrible thing to do."
When asked whether actors should feel responsible for influencing people’s choices around beauty treatments or cosmetic procedures, Sandeepa Dhar said she does not believe that burden should fall on performers.
“I don’t think actors should be responsible for such decisions. Yes, we can be role models and inspire people with our efforts. Actors shouldn’t be taking such pressures," she added.
Directed by Ravi Udyawar, Do Deewane Seher Mein also features Siddhant Chaturvedi in an important role.
Released in theatres on February 20, the film explores how societal expectations and personal insecurities can shape relationships, while also encouraging conversations around self-worth and acceptance.
