Arshad Warsi talks about interfaith marriage with wife Maria

Actor Arshad Warsi recently recalled a very intimate period of his life, sharing details of his marriage to Maria Goretti and her parents' initial concerns about their union.

He talked about how his initial feelings of anxiety and doubt gradually gave way to acceptance, trust, and sincere love.

Arshad Warsi clarified in an interview with Lallantop that Maria Goretti's parents were naturally worried when they first found out about their daughter's relationship.

The concern, he said, came from the fact that it was an interfaith marriage, something they had never imagined for her.

Describing them as simple and deeply religious people, he recalled their reaction, saying, “Voh thode ghabraye hue the. Catholic girl and Muslim guy. Woh dono bahut sharif hain. Unki zindagi main Jesus Christ ke alava aur kuch nahi hai. Voh thode se the ghabraye hue because they expected Maria to marry another Catholic guy jo 9-5 job karega, aur isne muslim ladka pakad liya aur jobless.”

Despite their worries, Arshad Warsi said Maria Goretti’s parents always saw the good in him. Even when things felt uncertain, they trusted his intentions and believed he would take care of their daughter. Over time, that quiet faith only grew stronger.

Speaking about how their bond evolved, he shared, “In their heart, they knew that he is a good human. They had that confidence that he would take care of our daughter. But slowly they realised that mujhse behtar koi hai hi nahi. They are very happy now, and they live with me. Unka self respect forces them to live in their own house, but hum kaise bhi jugaad karke unhe le aaye yahan pe.”

Looking back on how his relationship with Maria Goretti began, Arshad Warsi recalled first meeting her at St Xavier’s College, where he had gone to judge a competition.

Their bond grew when Maria Goretti started working with him in theatre, spending long hours rehearsing and performing together.

Though not without effort, what started out as friendship eventually evolved into love. Maria Goretti rejected him multiple times before finally agreeing, according to Arshad Warsi.

Since getting married in 1996, the couple has created a life based on mutual respect, love, and experiences. Zeke Warsi, their son, and Zene Warsi, their daughter, are their two children today.
