As Indian cinema honours the 101st birth anniversary of Legendary actor Raj Kapoor, tributes are pouring in not only for his extraordinary showmanship but also for the depth and complexity of his life and work.
On the occasion of his grandfather's birth anniversary, Armann Jain shared a heartfelt post, revisiting his memories. In his post, he is seen dancing with his mother, Reema Jain, and his son to the tune of his popular song, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. He captioned the post as, "Happy 101st Nanaji! Always celebrating you."
Born on 14 December 1924 into the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor founded RK Films at the young age of 24 and quickly became one of Hindi cinema’s most influential figures.
He excelled as an actor, director, and producer, using his films to tell stories about poverty, class divisions, and the struggles of common people, earning him the title of India’s quintessential “showman.”
Raj Kapoor’s cinematic style drew inspiration from Charlie Chaplin, blending heartfelt storytelling with humour and social commentary. His films, such as Awaara, Shree 420, and Mera Naam Joker, touched audiences across the globe, especially in the Soviet Union, China, West Asia, and Africa.
Awaara, in particular, became a massive cultural phenomenon abroad, selling millions of tickets and remaining one of the most-watched foreign films in certain regions. Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee once acknowledged Kapoor’s immense popularity in China, a recognition that even surprised the filmmaker.
Despite his global success, Raj Kapoor’s personal life was marked by deep emotions and contradictions. His on-screen chemistry with actress Nargis turned into a close personal relationship that ended painfully, an emotional journey reflected in many of his films. Professionally, his commitment to art sometimes came before profit, as seen in the case of Mera Naam Joker, which initially strained his finances even though it later gained critical respect.

Colleagues praised his hard work, generosity, and his tendency to value people more than budgets, mentoring the next generation of filmmakers and technicians. Over three decades after his death, his films continue to be revisited and reinterpreted, proving that cinema rooted in human emotion can travel far beyond language and geographic boundaries.
