Actors Aamir Khan and R Madhavan have gently poured cold water on the growing excitement around a possible sequel to 3 Idiots, reminding fans that some stories are special precisely because they are left untouched.
Even 16 years after its release in 2009, the film continues to live on in popular culture, with viewers frequently revisiting Rancho, Farhan and Raju and wondering what became of them.
That curiosity has naturally fuelled repeated speculation about a sequel. But for the actors who brought those characters to life, the idea comes with both affection and hesitation.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, R Madhavan addressed the chatter with honesty and humour. "A sequel to 3 Idiots sounds great. But it also sounds far-fetched. All three of us, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and I, are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel? What are our lives like now? It is an interesting thought. But hardly conducive to a proper sequel. I would love to work with Raju Hirani again. But 3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic."
In the same interview, Aamir Khan echoed that emotional connection, admitting how close the film still is to his heart. "We had so much fun making that film! My character Rancho is the most popular character I’ve played. People still talk about Rancho. So yeah, I’d love to do a sequel. But no one has approached me."
Earlier, Sharman Joshi had also shared his mixed feelings about the constant rumours. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, "I so hope that happens, but I have not been informed yet. On more than a couple of occasions, there has been buzz that the 3 Idiots Sequel is happening. The last time the reports came, it turned out to be for an ad campaign. Let’s see, hopefully this time it’s true."
He added that any real movement would only come from the original creators: "I am in no position to know, but only the master, Raju sir, Abhijat (Joshi, writer) sir and Aamir would be working on it if there is potential."
Looking back, Sharman Joshi recalled how transformative the film was for him personally. "I was in the gym, building six-pack abs when I got the final call from Raju sir. He told me ab 3 saal tak tu gym ki shakal nahi dekhega (Now you won't go to the gym for 3 years)," he laughed, before adding, "I think of 3 Idiots, and a smile comes on my face. That film felt like a fairytale, from the time I heard the story till today."
As the first Indian film to cross Rs 400 crore worldwide, 3 Idiots — also starring Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Omi Vaidya and Mona Singh — set new benchmarks.
