In a recent revelation, Vishal Punjabi, the acclaimed wedding filmmaker behind the lavish weddings of Anushka Sharma-Virat Kohli and Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh, shared why he had to turn down the opportunity to film Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s wedding.
Alia and Ranbir, two of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, approached Punjabi to cover their wedding ceremony held at their Vastu home in Bandra, Mumbai, on April 14, 2022. Despite the prestigious request, Vishal Punjabi had to decline, and the reasons behind this decision offer a glimpse into the often hectic and unpredictable world of high-profile wedding filmmaking.
In an interview featured on Shivani Pau’s podcast, Punjabi explained that the primary reason for turning down the offer was a scheduling conflict. Alia and Ranbir had approached him just a few weeks before their wedding date. By then, Punjabi had already committed to another project, a wedding in London. This prior engagement made it impossible for him to accommodate their request. He noted, "I wasn’t available when Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt called me for their wedding. A lot of these celebrities call me two weeks before their wedding because it’s hush-hush and nobody can know."
Punjabi expressed his regret over not being able to film their wedding but emphasized the importance of honoring existing commitments. He mentioned, "I didn’t film Alia and Ranbir’s wedding because I was already booked to film a wedding in London for a very beautiful, lovely bride. I wouldn’t change that for the world even now. She was gorgeous, and it was a beautiful experience. Ranbir and Alia would have gotten a nice wedding video."
The wedding of Alia and Ranbir was a much-anticipated event in the Bollywood circuit, marked by an intimate ceremony at their residence. It was attended by close family members and friends, including notable personalities like Soni Razdan, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, Bharat Sahni, Mahesh Bhatt, Shaheen Bhatt, and Neetu Kapoor. The guest list also featured Kareena and Saif Ali Khan, along with their children Taimur and Jeh, Ayan Mukerji, Karan Johar, and members of the Ambani family, among others.
In an earlier interview, Ranbir’s mother, actress Neetu Kapoor, revealed that Alia and Ranbir had been planning a destination wedding for two years before deciding to exchange vows at home. This decision reflected a shift towards more private and personal ceremonies, even among high-profile celebrities, influenced perhaps by the ongoing pandemic and a desire for intimacy.
Punjabi’s reflections highlight the challenges faced by wedding filmmakers in balancing multiple high-profile requests and the inevitable scheduling conflicts that arise. His commitment to his clients and the integrity with which he handles his projects stand out as key principles guiding his work. The anecdote also sheds light on the logistical complexities involved in planning and executing celebrity weddings, where confidentiality and last-minute arrangements often add layers of difficulty.
For Alia and Ranbir, the absence of Punjabi’s team did not diminish the charm of their wedding. The couple’s choice to host an intimate ceremony at home, surrounded by their closest family and friends, underscored a trend towards more personal and meaningful celebrations. Despite the change in plans, their wedding remains one of the most talked-about events in Bollywood.
