The long-awaited third instalment of The Princess Diaries series has officially been greenlit. The beloved film franchise, based on Meg Cabot’s young adult novel, will see Anne Hathaway reprise her role as Princess Mia of Genovia, thrilling fans of the series.
The news was confirmed by Hathaway, who shared the announcement on her Instagram late Friday night. In a selfie video, interspersed with clips from the first two films, she recited the iconic “Shut up!” line, much to the excitement of her followers.
According to Variety, The Princess Diaries 3 will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who originally launched the franchise. Anne Hathaway is also set to produce the film under her production company, Somewhere Pictures.
The film has been in development for two years, with Anne Hathaway previously teasing fans in an interview last year, saying, “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet, but we’re in a good place.” Now, it seems production is finally moving forward.
The Princess Diaries series follows Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary teenager who learns that her estranged father was the King of Genovia, a fictional European kingdom. Her grandmother, portrayed by Julie Andrews, soon appears, urging Mia to embrace her royal heritage and prepare to become a princess.

The third instalment will bring fresh energy with a new director at the helm. Adele Lim, best known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians, has joined the project as the director. In a statement shared by Variety, Lim expressed her excitement: “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond thrilled to help bring this third chapter to life. We can’t wait to celebrate the themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

While production is expected to begin this year, the film’s release date has yet to be announced.
