When Karan Johar once joked that Akshaye Khanna would skip an Oscar ceremony if it clashed with his weekend plans, it perfectly summed up the actor’s famously detached relationship with fame. Years later, as Akshaye basks in renewed acclaim for Dhurandhar, that old anecdote has resurfaced, reminding fans why his personality has always stood apart in Bollywood.
Akshaye’s understated, almost monk-like approach to work and life has long fascinated the industry. While most actors chase visibility, networking, and constant public presence, Akshaye has consistently chosen distance and routine over spectacle. That contrast was humorously highlighted by filmmaker Karan Johar, whose decades-old comments about the actor are now going viral again.
In the resurfaced clip, Karan narrates an anecdote that captures Akshaye’s priorities with surgical precision. “He is in Bombay from Monday to Friday. Then he goes to Alibag. That’s it,” Karan says. He then delivers the punchline that has since become legend: “If he were winning an Academy Award on a Saturday, he wouldn’t come back because he’s in Alibag on weekends.”
The story doesn’t end there. Recalling a cast-and-crew screening, Karan shared how even professional appreciation couldn’t override Akshaye’s personal rules. “We had a screening where everyone was saying he had done outstanding work. He said it was too far, and since it was 9 pm, he’d be asleep by then. No matter what time it is, he simply won’t come,” Karan recalled.
When questioned about skipping another industry screening, Akshaye’s response was equally matter-of-fact. “Yash Raj is too far. I live at Malabar Hill. I’ll watch it there,” he reportedly said, underscoring how geography and convenience often outweigh Bollywood’s social obligations for him.
Karan also revisited his childhood memories with Akshaye during Koffee With Karan in 2007, adding a personal layer to their dynamic. “There’s always talk about you being temperamental. I keep reading that, but I’ve never faced it socially,” Karan told him, before laughing, “But you were very rude to me as a child. You probably don’t remember it.”
Elaborating, Karan claimed they grew up in the same South Bombay neighbourhood. “I used to play badminton very badly, and Akshaye was an excellent player. He would come and say, ‘You, you-off the court.’ We were literally thrown off the court,” he said, half-jokingly adding, “I was scarred.”
Akshaye dismissed the story as exaggerated, but Karan stood his ground. “I swear I’m not making this up. I remember it clearly,” he insisted.
Today, as Akshaye Khanna earns widespread praise for his portrayal of Rehman Dakait in Dhurandhar alongside Ranveer Singh, these anecdotes only deepen his mystique. In an industry driven by noise, Akshaye’s quiet consistency and unapologetic boundaries remain his most compelling signature.
