Adnan Sami slams netizen on citizenship statement

Famous singer Adnan Sami, who has long been associated with Indian music and is best known for his chart-topping songs, was recently thrust into the centre of a social media uproar after becoming embroiled in a political debate about national security.

The announcement triggered a flurry of reactions online, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) taking a jibe at Sami, sarcastically asking, “What about Adnan Sami?” The singer, who officially became an Indian citizen in 2016, wasted no time in responding. Quoting the tweet, he wrote, “Who’s going to tell this illiterate idiot!!” – a sharp comeback that quickly went viral.

As the conversation gained momentum, several other users joined in, some questioning Sami’s loyalty and labelling him a “Pakistani agent.” One user from Pakistan mocked him by saying, “Adnan, bhai. Koi masla nhn, aap Pakistan mat aao. Fawad bhai ko chodo—aap ko abhi bohot information gather karni hai?”

Although not new to Sami, the online backlash occurred during a period of particularly high tensions over national identity and cross-border relations. The singer is steadfast in his position in spite of the criticism. He continues to call India his home and has frequently stated his strong emotional and legal ties to the nation.

Adnan had a difficult journey to become an Indian citizen. He previously disclosed that he was stateless for almost 18 months before receiving citizenship in 2016 following two unsuccessful applications. In response to claims that he moved to India for economic reasons, he had stated, “I’m a musician, not a politician.”

This came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah ordered Chief Ministers across the country to ensure that no Pakistani nationals remained in India past the deadline following the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians.

Sami has maintained his dedication to India over the years by participating in its music scene and openly defending his right to reside there.
