Amid the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, district administrations in Meerut and Muzaffarnagar have ordered the closure of all schools from July 16 to 23 due to traffic congestion and safety concerns. The decision comes as the annual pilgrimage reaches its peak, with Shivratri on July 23 expected to attract massive crowds of devotees.
Meerut School Closed
Meerut District Magistrate (DM) VK Singh issued an official directive stating, “The significant increase in the movement of Kanwariyas during this period necessitates measures to ensure public safety and manage traffic effectively. Schools will remain closed to protect students and avoid disruptions.” Classes are expected to resume on July 24.
Muzaffarnagar School Closed
Similarly, Muzaffarnagar DM Umesh Mishra mandated the shutdown of all government and private schools, including primary, secondary, degree, and technical institutions, for the same period. District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) Rajesh Kumar warned that strict action would be taken against any institution found violating the order.
Bareilly School Closed
In Bareilly, DM Avinash Singh announced that schools will remain closed on all four Mondays of the Sawan month, covering CBSE, ICSE, UP Board, and vocational institutions within a 5-km radius of Delhi Road and Badaun Road.
Badaun School Closed
Meanwhile, Badaun authorities have directed primary schools (Classes 1-8) to observe a weekly holiday every Saturday and Monday throughout the holy month.
The Kanwar Yatra has led to severe traffic disruptions, particularly along the Delhi-Meerut Highway, which has been converted into a one-way route to accommodate devotees. Commuters have reported delays of 2-3 hours for what is typically a 10-minute journey in areas like Muradnagar.
Haryana Schools Close in Protest After Principal's Murder
In a separate development, private schools across Haryana remained closed on July 16 in protest against the murder of a school principal in Hisar. The victim, who worked at Kartar Memorial School, was killed recently, sparking outrage among teachers and school staff.
