The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced changes to the schedule of the 2026 board examinations for several Class 10 and Class 12 subjects. In a communication issued to school principals, the board confirmed the rescheduling of papers originally set for March 3, 2026, citing administrative requirements.
According to the official letter dated December 29 from Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, examinations for 13 Class 10 subjects will now be held on March 11, 2026. The impacted subjects are Tibetan, German, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Bhoti, Bodo, Tangkhul, Japanese, Bhutia, Spanish, Kashmiri, Mizo, Bahasa Melayu, and Elements of Book Keeping and Accountancy.
For Class 12 students, the Legal Studies examination, also previously scheduled for March 3, has been moved to April 10, 2026.
In the circular, Dr. Bhardwaj stated, "All other examination dates remain unchanged. Schools are requested to kindly disseminate this information to all concerned students and parents for their information and necessary action."
The board confirmed that the official date sheets for the CBSE Class 10 and 12 board examinations 2026 are being amended. The revised dates will be accurately reflected in the students’ Admit Cards, which will be issued ahead of the examination cycle.
This schedule adjustment comes as CBSE prepares to implement a significant structural change starting from the 2026 academic session. As per the board’s earlier announcements, Class 10 board exams will be conducted biannually from the 2026 cycle.
Under this new framework:
Students will have the opportunity to improve their scores in a maximum of three subjects chosen from the core areas: Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages.
This move towards biannual exams is a direct implementation of the recommendations outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy advocates for reducing the “high-stakes” pressure associated with single-session board examinations by offering students more than one opportunity to perform. The goal is to foster a more flexible and supportive assessment system that reduces student anxiety and allows for better academic performance.
Key Takeaways for Students and Parents
Check Revised Schedules: Students appearing for the rescheduled subjects in Classes 10 and 12 for the 2026 exams must note the new dates.
Updated Admit Cards: The definitive source for the correct date and centre details will be the official CBSE Admit Card.
Plan Preparation Accordingly: With specific papers moved to March 11 and April 10, students should adjust their study plans to align with the new timeline.
Biannual Exam Option: Class 10 students from the 2026 batch should familiarize themselves with the new biannual exam system and its rules for improvement exams.
The CBSE has advised schools to ensure widespread communication of these changes to avoid any confusion among students and parents. All other examinations for the 2026 board cycle will proceed as per the previously announced schedule.
