  • Dr. Seuss's quote urges us to cherish memories, not mourn endings
  • Endings create space for new beginnings and experiences
  • Smiling honors the joy and growth from past experiences

We’ve all felt that pang in our hearts when something wonderful ends. Maybe it’s the final bell on the last day of school, the closing ceremony after an amazing event, or saying goodbye to a friend. In those moments, it’s easy to focus on the emptiness that follows, to feel sad that a happy chapter has closed.

But there’s another way to look at it—a perspective offered simply and beautifully by Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

This thought is a powerful choice. It doesn’t tell us our sadness is wrong. Instead, it invites us to gently shift our gaze. Crying because something is over focuses on the loss. It keeps us looking backward at a closed door. But smiling because it happened focuses on the gift. It turns our attention to the joy, the memories, and the growth that now live inside us because that experience was part of our story.

Think of it like a favorite book. You wouldn’t cry just because you turned the last page. You’d smile, remembering the adventures, the characters you grew to love, and how the story changed you. The book isn’t gone; its impact is now a part of you. The same is true for our experiences—the friendships, the achievements, the laughter. They shape who we are.

So how can we practice this in school and in life?

Cherish, don’t cling. Appreciate the good times fully while they last, but hold them lightly, like a precious photograph, not a heavy chain.

Be a collector of moments. Actively store up happy memories, inside jokes, and lessons learned. These become treasures you carry forward.

Let endings make space. Every ending creates room in your life for a new beginning, for fresh experiences and people yet to come.

Choosing to smile doesn’t mean you’ll never feel sadness. It means you decide which feeling gets the final word. It means honoring a beautiful experience with gratitude rather than grief. Today, if you’re facing an ending—big or small—try this simple shift. Look back, and instead of seeing a finish line, see a treasure chest of moments you were lucky enough to live. Your smile then becomes a celebration, a quiet thank you for the gift of what was, and a brave, hopeful step toward what will be next.
