  • We are not defined by our past; everyone can shape a better future

Oscar Wilde, who had a special way of turning a thought upside down to reveal its truth, once wrote something that can soften how we see others and ourselves. He said:

"The only difference between the saint and the sinner is that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future."

It’s a short sentence, but it holds a powerful and kind message about human beings.

What Does It Mean?

"Every saint has a past..."

We often picture a saint as a perfect person who has always been good. But Wilde says that’s not true. Every person we see as good and holy once had a life before that. They made mistakes. They had regrets. They learned hard lessons. Their goodness didn’t come from being born perfect; it grew from their experiences, including their failures. Their "past" might be full of struggles we know nothing about.

"...and every sinner has a future."

On the other hand, when we see someone doing wrong or making bad choices, it’s easy to label them a "sinner" and think they will always be that way. Wilde argues that this is not fair or true. Every person who is lost or making poor choices still has time ahead of them—a future. They have the chance to learn, to change, to grow, and to become a different person. No one is stuck forever.

Why This Matters for Us

This idea teaches us two very important things:

Don’t put people on pedestals. When we admire someone a lot, we should remember they are human, too. They became who they are by walking a path, and that path likely had some bumps. Their story gives us hope that we can also grow.

Don’t write people off. When someone disappoints us or behaves badly, we should remember that people can change. Today’s actions do not have to be tomorrow’s story. Everyone deserves the hope of a better future.

Most of all, it reminds us about our own story. You are not defined forever by your worst mistakes (that’s your past). And you are never without the hope of becoming better (that’s your future).

In the end, Wilde isn’t really talking about saints and sinners. He’s talking about all of us. We all have a past we’ve learned from, and we all have a future we can shape. The real difference isn't in labels—it's in what we choose to do with the time we’re given.
