  • At 12, Steve Jobs called HP's co-founder for parts to build a frequency counter.
  • Bill Hewlett sent the parts and offered Jobs a summer job at HP's assembly line
  • Jobs' bold call taught him that courage to ask can open doors to opportunity

Most twelve-year-olds are focused on friends, school, or games. But a young Steve Jobs had a different kind of puzzle on his mind. He was determined to build a frequency counter, but he was missing some special parts.

Instead of giving up, he had a bold idea. He picked up a phone book, found the number for Bill Hewlett—the co-founder of the giant tech company Hewlett-Packard—and dialed.

To his surprise, Mr. Hewlett himself answered. Steve, barely a teenager, introduced himself and asked for the parts he needed. There was a moment of laughter, not of mockery, but of surprise. Yet, Bill Hewlett didn’t hang up. He listened. He was impressed by the young boy’s passion and courage.

Not only did he send the parts, but he did something even more extraordinary. He offered Steve a summer job at HP, working on the assembly line where those very frequency counters were made.

For Steve, it was magic. “I was in heaven,” he would later say. That one brave phone call opened a door to a world he dreamed of, setting him on a path that would eventually lead to the creation of Apple.

Steve carried this lesson for life: “Most people never pick up the phone and call… most people never ask.” He learned that people, even the busiest and most important ones, are often willing to help if you simply have the courage to reach out. The only true failure, he believed, was not trying at all.

He wasn’t the only one. Young Bill Gates would sneak out late to practice on computers, trading his skills for precious time to learn. These future giants started not with money or special connections, but with a simple, often-scary step: they asked.

The world can seem too big and leaders too far away. But Steve Jobs’ story reminds us that a moment of bravery—one phone call, one request, one raised hand—can change everything. It’s a lesson not about luck, but about action. Don’t just dream about the parts you need to build your future. Have the courage to ask for them.

The difference between those who dream and those who do is often just one question.
