Delhi University has initiated an investigation following the failure of nearly 500 students of the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) in exams conducted at Jesus and Mary College (JMC). The college administration has also filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against a staff member over alleged discrepancies in record-keeping. However, there has been no response from JMC authorities or NCWEB regarding the allegations.
On Monday, hundreds of affected students, joined by members of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) affiliated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), staged a demonstration outside JMC. The students raised slogans against the administration and demanded immediate action, holding posters calling for justice.
The controversy began when first and second-year students reported inconsistencies in their exam results. Some students were marked as "failed," "Essential Repeat" (ER), or "absent," despite attending their exams. According to a DU official, these discrepancies were identified after the college received numerous complaints.
The protesting students claim they performed well in their exams and accused the college of unfair practices. They demanded access to their answer sheets and correction of their results.
Vidhi Chaudhari, an NCWEB student, said, “For the past year, our college has been facing issues with ERs in our results. Despite appearing for exams, the college has marked 'ER' and 'Fail' in our results. Whenever we raise this issue, we are told it will be resolved. Now, we are being asked to reappear for ER exams even though we have proof we passed.”
Maya John, a member of DU’s Academic Council, stated that similar issues have been reported by NCWEB students from other colleges. “NCWEB centres should have a separate examination branch and additional staff to handle the workload. However, the University administration has not implemented these necessary reforms,” John said.
A senior DU official stated that the university is actively addressing the issue. “We have met with students and resolved similar concerns in the past. Given the repeated nature of these complaints, we have instructed the college to investigate and address the discrepancies urgently,” the official said.
