Vince Zampella was one of the most influential figures in modern video gaming, shaping the industry over the past two decades through some of its most iconic franchises.
Best known as the co-creator of Call of Duty, Vince Zampella helped redefine the first-person shooter genre and left a lasting impact on how games are made and experienced.
Born in the United States, Vince Zampella rose to prominence in 2003 when he co-created Call of Duty alongside long-time collaborators Jason West and Grant Collier.
Inspired partly by World War II, the game quickly stood out for its cinematic storytelling and immersive gameplay. What began as a single title soon grew into a global phenomenon. The Call of Duty franchise went on to sell more than 500 million copies worldwide, becoming a cultural landmark and a major revenue driver for Activision, now owned by Microsoft. Its influence continues to expand, with a live-action film adaptation currently in development.
However, Call of Duty represented only part of Vince Zampella’s creative legacy. He was also instrumental in the development of several other hugely popular franchises, including Medal of Honor, Titanfall and Apex Legends.
Across all his projects, Vince Zampella was known for prioritising the player experience above all else. As Keza MacDonald, The Guardian’s video games editor, told BBC Newshour, “He really cared about the player experience, he cared about making games, he cared about how people felt when they played and that really came across whenever you spoke to him.”
In 2010, Vince Zampella and Jason West were dismissed from Activision, leading to a high-profile legal dispute that was eventually settled in 2012. Rather than stepping away from the industry, Vince Zampella went on to co-found Respawn Entertainment, later acquired by Electronic Arts.
At Electronic Arts, he continued to shape major titles, including work on Battlefield 6, a direct competitor to Call of Duty.
Vince Zampella died at the age of 55 following a fatal car accident on a Los Angeles highway. Electronic Arts confirmed his passing, saying, “This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince's family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work.” The California Highway Patrol stated, “For unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed.”
Infinity Ward, the studio behind Call of Duty, summed up his influence by saying Vince Zampella “will always have a special place in our history” and adding, “Your legacy of creating iconic, lasting entertainment is immeasurable.”
Through the worlds he built and the experiences he created, Vince Zampella’s legacy will continue to live on with millions of players around the world.
