Around 40 percent students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (IIT-BHU) are yet to secure placements in the ongpong placement season 2023-24, as per RTI data seen by Moneycontrol.
As of May 1, 1,735 students registered for placement, 1,043 have so far managed to receive job offers, revealed the RTI reply to Dheeraj Singh, founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group.
This might be the largest number of students – 692– not placed by IIT BHU in the last three years as the institute had 24 percent (336) and 19 percent (250) of unplaced students in 2023 and 2022 respectively.
However, it's important to note that students who were not able to secure placement have been categorised as “Not Placed/Higher Studies’ in the RTI data shared by the institute.

IIT BHU had been admitting students through the JEE conducted by the IITs since 1972. The erstwhile IT-BHU was ranked consistently amongst the top engineering institutions of the country. IT-BHU became IIT (BHU) Varanasi on June 29, 2012, by an Act of Parliament.
Although the average salary has remained almost consistent in the last three years, 22.85 lakh per annum (LPA) in 2024, 22.68 LPA in 2023, and 23.23 LPA in 2022, the median salary has jumped multifold.
Currently, the median salary stands at Rs 20 LPA, a substantial jump from 12 LPA in 2023. The median salary was 20.40 LPA in 2022.
IIT BHU is among the many IITs who are facing hurdles in securing placements this season as recruiters are turning cautious of their hiring strategy. Placement officers have voiced their concerns of companies recruiting in less numbers and offering lesser salaries compared to the last year making them unattractive to students.
