An intoxicated CISF constable rammed into an autorickshaw on the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mumbai in the early hours of Thursday, killing a woman and injuring three others.
The 50-year-old woman, Hazra Shaikh, hailing from Hyderabad, had come to Mumbai to celebrate Eid. Hazra’s two daughters and the auto driver were injured. The driver, a CISF constable, was arrested at the scene.
Hazra, along with her husband, Ismail Shaikh, and their three daughters had visited her sister’s home in Sakinaka, Andheri, for Eid celebrations on Wednesday. After dinner, the family decided to head to their eldest daughter’s house. They split into two autorickshaws—Hazra and her two elder daughters, Shaheen (20), Shirin (17) in one, while her husband, their youngest daughter Shaina (16) and their two-year-old grandson Sifan travelled in another.
Between 12.25 am and 12.35 am, Hazra's auto was moving on the north-bound arm of the JVLR flyover on the Western Express Highway, Goregaon East. Suddenly, a CISF vehicle moving on the south-bound arm, jumped the divider hurtled towards the auto and rammed the front portion.
Ismail, who was travelling in the vehicle behind, witnessed the horrific crash. He immediately stopped his autorickshaw and rushed to his wife and daughters. Hazra was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Shaheen, who sustained a spinal cord injury, is admitted to Cooper Hospital, while Shirin, who suffered injuries to her shoulders and legs, is being treated at the Trauma Centre in Jogeshwari.
"We haven’t told Shaheen and Shirin about their mother's death yet," a relative, told TOI.
The Vanrai police have seized the CISF vehicle and arrested the driver, Dhodiram Yadav (33), a CISF constable stationed at Kalina Camp. "The vehicle had undergone repairs at Malad and Yadav was steering it back to Kalina when the crash occurred," said a cop.
Yadav has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with section 185 (drunk driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
