Delhi Police have unveiled sweeping traffic restrictions and diversions for the Connaught Place and India Gate precincts ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations on Wednesday. The measures, designed to manage anticipated large crowds, will severely limit vehicular access from 7 pm onwards and impose a strict pass system for the city’s central commercial hub.
The advisory, issued by the Delhi Police traffic unit, outlines that no private or public transport will be permitted to proceed towards Connaught Place from twelve critical approach points. These include Mandi House, Bengali Market, the north foot of Ranjit Singh Flyover, Minto Road, Patel Chowk and Windsor Place, among others. Access to the Inner, Middle and Outer Circles of Connaught Place will be exclusively reserved for vehicles bearing valid passes.
Parking on first-come, first-served basis
With parking space at a premium, the police have designated alternative parking zones on nearby roads, including Kali Bari Marg, Copernicus Marg, DDU Marg and Rajendra Prasad Road. The advisory explicitly warns that parking will be permitted on a first-come, first-served basis and that unauthorised vehicles will be towed away and prosecuted.
Specific instructions have been issued for commuters heading to the New Delhi Railway Station from the south, with prescribed routes via Mandir Marg and Rani Jhansi Road. Entry to the station from Connaught Place via Chelmsford Road will be completely barred.
India Gate and Delhi zoo area also affected
Reflecting similar concerns for the India Gate lawns, a popular gathering spot, the police have prepared for possible full closures of the C-Hexagon area. Should pedestrian numbers swell, traffic will be diverted from twelve points surrounding India Gate, including Rajpath, Janpath and Mandi House.
Additionally, the public has been advised to avoid the Bhairon Road and Mathura Road stretch between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Pragati Maidan due to potential congestion from crowds at the National Zoological Park.
The police have strongly recommended that revellers and daily commuters alike plan their travel meticulously. For north-south movement, alternative routes such as Ring Road (from ISBT to Ashram) and routes via Delhi Gate and Mathura Road are advised. East-west traffic should utilise Ring Road, Bhairon Road, Mother Teresa Crescent and Shankar Road.
