A shocking incident of public assault has been reported from Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district, where a young man was allegedly humiliated and beaten for marrying his long-time partner against her family’s wishes, NDTV reported.

The couple — Sai Chand and Sai Durga — had been in a relationship for eight years. However, Sai Durga’s family reportedly disapproved of the match. As per the report, the two went ahead and got married a few days ago after seeking police protection. While Sai Chand’s parents attended the ceremony, her family chose to stay away.

Soon after the wedding, some of Sai Durga’s relatives allegedly tracked down Sai Chand. A video of the assault that has since gone viral shows him being dragged by his hair, tied to an electric pole, and repeatedly slapped and beaten.

“The parents of Sai Durga did not agree, it appears, because she was working with the postal department while Sai Chand was still unemployed,” Eluru SP Shiva Pratap Kishore told NDTV.

“We have registered a case of kidnapping and assault. No one is permitted to bypass the legal system to settle personal or family disputes,” he added.

Police have launched a detailed investigation and are currently providing protection to the newlyweds.
