Moneycontrol BureauVoLTE - voice over LTE technology with 4G is going to be very popular in the coming few years and it is estimated that about 40 percent of voice calls will be riding on it by 2020, says Aircel's Chief Technology Officer Sameer Dave, adding that the VoLTE handsets will be much in demand. However, the traditional voice service through circuit switched technology will continue to be relevant and dominate in the local market, says Dave. Moreover, going forward as the data along with VoLTE handsets become cheaper, the video consumption will increase, says Dave in an Economic Times article. Some of the advantages of having VoLTE would be an improvement in call quality, better coverage and connectivity compared to that of 2G/3G. According to some, the battery life too is likely to improve and the possibility of making video calls like Skype. The only disadvantage with VoLTE so far has been that basically, it is data-only networking technology, which does not support voice calls naturally like 3G/2G that were made with voice calls and the data was then added to support it.With the entry of Reliance Jio, which has a pan-India VoLTE network, most other telecom operators in the country have started integrating VoLTE technology to keep up with competition. Bharti Airtel too is planning to move to the technology in next one and half years.
