Israeli officials are increasingly concerned that Iran is rapidly expanding its ballistic missile production after suffering damage from Israeli strikes earlier this year, and are preparing to brief President Donald Trump on options for renewed military action, NBC News reported, citing people familiar with the plans.
The officials believe Iran’s efforts to rebuild missile facilities and repair its damaged air defence systems pose a more immediate threat than the reconstitution of nuclear enrichment sites bombed by the US in June, the report said.
Netanyahu–Trump meeting planned
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet Trump later this month at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. During the talks, Netanyahu is likely to argue that Iran’s missile expansion threatens not only Israel but broader regional and US interests, according to sources quoted by NBC News.
Israeli officials are expected to present Trump with options for US involvement, ranging from limited support to joint operations or Israel acting alone.
Missile production seen as immediate risk
While Israel is also monitoring signs that Iran is attempting to reconstitute nuclear enrichment sites struck by the US, officials view missile production as the more pressing concern.
Left unchecked, Iran could increase ballistic missile production to as many as 3,000 missiles per month, according to people briefed on Israel’s assessments, NBC News reported.
“The threat of the missiles is very real, and we weren’t able to prevent them all last time,” a former Israeli official told NBC News.
Context of earlier strikes
US and Israeli forces struck Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure in June during an operation known as Operation Midnight Hammer. The US deployed B-2 bombers and bunker-busting munitions, while Israeli forces targeted missile sites and Iran’s S-300 air defence systems.
Trump has said the operation “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities, though some early assessments suggested the damage may not have been as extensive as claimed.
Diplomacy and regional tensions
The Israeli push comes as Tehran has signalled interest in resuming diplomatic talks with Washington, a factor that could complicate efforts to secure US backing for further strikes.
Israeli officials are also concerned about Iran’s funding of regional proxy groups, which they believe could accelerate Tehran’s ability to defend nuclear sites and revive its broader weapons programmes, NBC News reported.
