As Canada mourns the victims of the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shooting, investigators are focusing on the background of the 18-year-old suspect at the centre of the tragedy.
According to Reuters, police have identified the suspect as Jesse Van Rootselaar, a former student who had dropped out of the school four years ago. Authorities say she died by suicide inside the school library after carrying out the attack.
Here is what officials and media reports have confirmed so far.
Former student with prior police contact
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Van Rootselaar had prior interactions with law enforcement related to mental health concerns.
She had reportedly been apprehended more than once under British Columbia’s Mental Health Act for assessment and treatment. Local officers had visited her family home multiple times over the past several years in response to concerns about her wellbeing.
“Police had attended that residence on multiple occasions … dealing with concerns of mental health,” McDonald said.
Authorities also confirmed that firearms had previously been seized from the home and later returned following an appeal by the legal owner.
Van Rootselaar had once held a firearms licence, which expired in 2024.
Sequence of events under investigation
Police believe the shooting began at the suspect’s family home, where her mother, 39, and 11-year-old stepbrother were found dead.
Investigators say she then went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she shot several victims before being found dead at the scene. A long gun and a modified handgun were recovered.
RCMP have stated that there is no indication of accomplices and that the suspect acted alone. Motive remains under investigation.
Conflicting media reports on identity
Canadian media outlets, including Western Standard and Juno News, reported that the suspect was 18-year-old Jesse Strang. According to Juno News, the name was confirmed by a close family member, identified as the suspect’s uncle, Russell G. Strang.
Police, however, have officially identified the suspect as Jesse Van Rootselaar and have not confirmed alternate reporting on the name.
Authorities have urged caution regarding unverified details circulating on social media. Claims about the suspect’s online presence and personal identity have not been formally confirmed by law enforcement.
Investigators are analysing digital records, witness accounts and forensic evidence as they reconstruct the timeline and assess whether there were warning signs that were missed.
A broader review likely
The revelations about prior mental health interventions and firearms history are expected to trigger broader questions about Canada’s monitoring systems, gun licensing oversight and crisis response frameworks.
While Canada has stricter gun laws than the United States, licensed firearm ownership remains legal after background checks and training.
For now, investigators say the focus remains on establishing verified facts. Further details are expected as the RCMP completes its review.
