Dramatic footage from Bondi Beach shows a civilian stepping in to tackle and disarm one of the gunmen during Sunday evening’s deadly shooting, as chaos unfolded at one of Sydney’s busiest waterfronts.

The video captures the man, dressed in a white shirt, crouching behind a car in a beachside car park just metres from a gunman wearing white pants, a black top and what appeared to be an armoured vest. As shots ring out, the bystander suddenly rushes forward between parked vehicles and grabs the shooter from behind, locking him in a headlock.

After a violent struggle lasting several seconds, the civilian wrests the shotgun away, sending the gunman falling backwards. The man then briefly points the weapon at the attacker, who retreats towards a nearby bridge while glancing over his shoulder. Moments later, the bystander calmly places the shotgun against a tree.

The same footage shows a second shooter on a raised bridge nearby, ducking in and out of view as he exchanges gunfire with police sheltering behind cars. Another officer approaches from the opposite side and appears to fatally shoot the gunman on the bridge. A second suspect was later taken into custody.

Separate videos show NSW Police officers administering CPR to the gunman who was shot, while another man receives medical treatment. In additional footage, police can be seen attending to two men lying on the ground, with a shotgun visible underneath one of them and multiple spent shotgun shells scattered nearby. A bystander is heard shouting abuse, and a shirtless man briefly kicks one of the men before police intervene and move him away.

Ten people, including the shooter, have been killed in what authorities believe was a targeted attack on a Jewish event at Bondi Beach. At least a dozen others were injured, including two police officers.

A brochure for Chanukah By The Sea had urged attendees to gather at Bondi Beach Park near the children’s playground at 5pm. The area was also crowded for the Bondi Christmas markets, which were underway at the time of the shooting.

NSW Ambulance said paramedics were called to the scene at 6.45pm following reports of multiple people being shot. More than 26 emergency resources were deployed, including helicopter medical teams, road intensive care paramedics and special operations units. Several victims were transported to St Vincent’s Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St George Hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing”. He said police and emergency responders were working to save lives and urged people in the area to follow instructions from NSW Police, adding that authorities would provide updates as more information was confirmed.
