Small US plane crash-lands on busy Georgia road, strikes multiple vehicles

A small single-engine aircraft made a forced emergency landing on a busy road in Gainesville, Georgia, on Monday, crashing into multiple vehicles and injuring several people, police said.

The pilot was attempting to return to Gainesville’s Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport after experiencing engine trouble shortly after take-off but was unable to reach the runway due to insufficient power. As a result, the aircraft was forced to land on a crowded roadway, where it struck three vehicles.

A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the plane descending onto the busy street before colliding with several cars, triggering panic among motorists and pedestrians.

Police said that after landing, the aircraft’s right wing clipped a vehicle, causing the plane’s fuel tank to detach and crash into the rear of an SUV before hitting another vehicle. Several people sustained minor injuries, though no serious casualties were reported.

“The airplane didn't have enough power to make it to the airport, so the pilot made a forced landing on a roadway, where the plane struck three vehicles,” the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.

According to the NTSB, the plane was en route to Cherokee County Regional Airport in Canton from Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport when the incident occurred. “Shortly after departure, the pilot experienced problems with the engine and elected to turn back towards Gainesville to land there,” the agency said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the pilot of the Hawker Beechcraft BE-36 reported engine issues around 12:10 pm local time and confirmed that the agency will investigate the incident alongside the NTSB.

Following the crash, authorities closed the affected road and advised residents to expect extended traffic delays as emergency crews cleared debris and secured the area.
